A Day of Culture!

Today we took Lucy for a walk around Walsingham which is between Fakenham and Wells. The village has Saxon origins and was mentioned in the Doomsday book. The buildings you see today, date from the Mediaeval period when Walsingham was one of the major European centres of pilgrimage. After the reformation pilgrimage ceased. The modern pilgrimage revival began at the turn of the twentieth century and Walsingham is once again a major centre of pilgrimage with both Roman Catholic and Anglican shrines. We had a walk round the gardens of Walsingham Abbey (ruins) and then a stroll around the town.

There was a lovely 'ford' that we had to cross to get into Walsingham, couldn't resist getting out of the car and taking a photo!!

I bought a postcard of the Pump taken in the 1890s and took the same photo as it looks today.
